Petra White invests them with free-verse vigour, while confidently drawing in some of pentameter\u2019s gifts of cadence for phrasing.<\/p>\n<p>She leans to themes of growing up, yet autobiography is barely the point. \u2018Grave\u2019 gazes as at a mirror image of a cult childhood. \u2018Highway\u2019, written recently, thinks back into a hippie journey at twenty: \u2018I\u2019 sits very lightly \u2013 just visible \u2013 in these poems, and in the book. \u2018Southbank\u2019, about office work, is satire, and affection.<\/p>\n<p>Her concern is quite general: to say something about our time and place, and the surprise of its opening out to worlds of otherness.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Incoming Tide<\/i>\u00a0was shortlisted for the 2007 Judith Wright Calanthe Prize in the Queensland Premier\u2019s Literary Awards.
