These primary directions mark the divisions of this restless book of poems, Recurrence, by Graeme Miles. \u2018Up\u2019 and \u2018Down\u2019 in their different ways move outside the human game, but \u2018Across\u2019 travels &#8211; Australia, India and Europe \u2013 moving around poles of orientation and disorientation, sleep and waking.<\/p>\n<p>Miles\u2019 poetry often turns to myth and ritual, but is not absorbed in the past. As the title implies, it is concerned with the resurgence of the apparently past in the present. It is a book of metamorphoses and returns.<\/p>\n<p>Central to the collection are some longer poems and sequences. \u2018Photis\u2019 is an oblique short fiction, moving somewhere alongside Apuleius\u2019 Golden Ass. \u2018Verandah\u2019 and \u2018Causes\u2019 explore the traces of personal and collective histories, and the subterranean roots of the domestic and familial.
