She is a poet whose work frequently reflects historical research. Australian composer Andr\u00e9e Greenwell has adapted two of her books (<em>Botany Bay Document<\/em>, 1996 \u2013 retitled\u00a0<em>Dreaming Transportation\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 and\u00a0<em>The Hanging of Jean Lee<\/em>, 1998) for music-theatre: both enjoyed seasons at the Sydney Opera House.\u00a0<em>Nervous Arcs\u00a0<\/em>won the Mary Gilmore Award for a first book of Australian poetry in 1995, and was also shortlisted for the NSW Premier\u2019s Prize. Her fourth collection,\u00a0<em>The Fall<\/em>, was shortlisted for Premier\u2019s Prizes in Victoria, NSW and Queensland. Here fifth,\u00a0<em>Vertigo<\/em>|<em>a cantata<\/em>| was published by John Leonard Press, in 2007.
